Gas Water Heating
Gas & electric instant hot water heaters are also sometimes called tankless hot water heaters. These geysers don’t suffer from Legionella problems or cost issues from being left on. You pay only when you turn on the hot tap.
As there is no tank they measure the sizes with flow of water through the system. The sizes are classified in litres per minute (l/min) to heat to 20°C.
The hotter the water you need the slower water has to flow to heat it. If you want 45°C water temperature it is generally an accurate estimate to lower the flow rate by 50-60% of your gas heater flow rate.
18 l/min gas geyser @ 45°C = 9 to 12 l/min flow rate
A guide on maximum flow rates through the hot AND cold pipes.
- Shower 7 to 17 l/min
- Sink Tap 4 to 10 l/min
- Baths Tap 10 to 15 l/min
NOTE: Average bath temperatures are 40°C to 42°C and 46°C maximum.
2 TYPES OF GAS INSTANT HOT WATER HEATERS
BATTERY POWERED – Battery ignition systems are the standard most of the smaller units sold in South Africa. Usual sizes range from 6 to 18 l/min flow rate.
FORCED EXHAUST – Wired in to your electrics, the electronically controlled system can set output temperatures with a digital control panel installed inside the house. These types of units are used for larger consumptions of hot water and are available in
16, 18, 20, 24, 26, & 32 l/min.
Even the largest, gas units cannot supply enough hot water for simultaneous, multiple uses in large households. To overcome this problem, you can install two or more water heaters, connect them in parallel for simultaneous demands or install them as separate water heaters.
RECOMMENDED INSTALLATIONS
Gas water heaters offer unlimited hot water as long as you have gas and so it gives you the flexibility you might need. If you want to upgrade later then attach a solar geyser that will give you the benefit of free hot water.

Best of Both Worlds! Gas Instant Heater as a ‘Top Up’ when The Solar Geyser has run out. Solar and heat pump geysers require you to wait for your water to heat up. They are reliant on sun, environment and electricity to be effective
A NOTE ABOUT GAS
Many rumors are spread about the safety issues of gas, natural and LPG canister. There is a general perception that it is dangerous and yet a large number of people in the world use it without problems. If your gas is installed by a qualified gas installer and the electrics are managed by a qualified electrician then you are very likely to have a very reliable system.
Ensure you have a reputable delivery as gas supplies can run short.
Your gas geyser should be checked by a certified gas man every year. If you have concerns about your electrician or gas installer then call us and we will be able to offer you alternative options.
